From his work with children on using facebook to ridicule their teachers in the arab digital expression camps, to his work with pro democracy activists on using blogs to mobilize thousands of Egyptians against their government in the Kefaya movement, Alaa just loves helping people use ICTs to stick it to the man.

By day he works as a Free/Open Source Software developer, by night he dons his mask and cape and patrols the streets of cairo, jumping from campaign to campaign building websites, providing support and training, looking out for activists in need. He likes to pretend that his work on the Egyptian Blogs Aggregator helped bring in a new era of citizen journalism and usher in a new generation of digital activists, while the rest of the world acts as if his blog is relevant.

My name is Sami Ben Gharbia. Born in Bizerte (Tunisia) in 1967, I fled from Tunisia in 1998 and live in The Netherlands as political refugee. I speak Arabic, French, Dutch, English, and a bit of Farsi. My personal blog [fikra] فكرة (which means idea in Arabic) has been censored in Tunisia since 2003. I initially start blogging with the publishing of the first Tunisian e-book (Borj Erroumi XL) that tells the story of the escapade that I was forced to, crossing Africa and the Middle East, to reach Europe and get asylum. I can also be found at nawaat.org, an independent Tunisian site that I run together with a wonderful team.

I joined Global Voices team as Advocacy Director. And I'am fascinated by the use of new information technologies for advocacy and fighting censorship and oppression. That’s why I’m blogging. That’s why I’m here.

Ahmad Gharbeia graduated with a BA in Business Administration, then obtained a MSc. in Business Information Technology in 2003. He has occupied ICT-management roles in few organisations before deciding to return to innocence, concentrating on grass-root initiatives, and has since been helping anyone with a cause to make the best out of computers and the Internet.

He's concerned with issues of Arabic content, archival and preservation of digital artefacts, and the digitisation of cultural products in traditional media; all the time advocating free licensing of content, FOSS, and open formats and standards.

On his blog, which he's keept since 2003, he often contemplates the subjects of technical writing in Arabic, and the technicalities of using Arabic in the modern age, as well as an assortment of seemingly chaotic interests and occupations; among which are the environment, civil liberties, and the issues of privacy and security in the digital realm of which he sometimes provides training for activists, journalists and whomever is interested!

A hobbyist-linguist, he originally wanted to be be an anthropologist, and still maintains a childhood dream of becoming an astronaut.

More about what's keeping me busy at the moment can found at http://ahmad.gharbeia.org
